Coming Up This Weekend: The Underground Music Showcase

The UMS  The yearly celebration of music known as the UMS — dubbed “the South by Southwest of Denver” by many – has always been at the forefront of Colorado’s burgeoning local music community. The festival started out as a delicately curated night of music at the Bluebird Theater with 100 percent of ticket sales going to the bands. The first year was modest, with 300 people coming out to hear four bands, but after a number of years bouncing between the Bluebird and Gothic theaters, the UMS moved to South Broadway in the Baker Historic District in the summer of 2006.

I probably should have blogged about this earlier but what can I say...I have a real job too.  Anyway, this weekend (actually it started last night) showcases about 315 local bands at various stages on South Broadway over 4 days.  Get a wristband and join in the local music mayhem at 1 of the million bars/stages in the area.  Should be a fun, assuming you like live music.  Wristbands are $40, which equates to about 12 cents per band.

Editors note: Besides being obviously bigger, I'm struggling to see how this is any different than the Westword music showcase.  But hey, you know how the saying goes.  If you build it, they will come.  And the UMS built it, so go get your drunken dance on!
